What is the cost of a cheap electric scooter?

Let me tell you what is the cost of a cheap electric scooter. Three weeks ago on our Facebook page. I shared a post of a young lad’s scooter blazing in the front garden of his home and it’s still on my mind. Now the lad was very lucky as he was in the same room at the time that smoke started to billow from the platform of his scooter. He had bought it from an online marketplace. But luckily he quickly picked the smoking scooter and ran downstairs placing the scooter outside his home just before the battery exploded.

The young lad’s mother said that she had bought it from an online marketplace for her son and that it was a lesson learned.

Cheap scooters come with cheap batteries and expensive consequences. They will end up costing a lot more than what you paid for the scooter in the first place. It is very hard to get a replacement battery for cheap electric scooters. Because most of the time you will end up having to scrap your scooter. It is even tougher to get an answer from an online market place seller when your scooter fails. And believe me it will fail at some point. Because I have been testing electric scooters and their batteries for 5 years now to find out what the perfect scooter is for Ireland’s environment.

So here’s a quick lesson on electric scooter batteries.

Firstly, a lot of budget and mid-priced electric scooters have battery packs made from generic Chinese manufactured cells. 99% of the time these battery packs are very poor and will fail sooner rather than later. On the other hand most premium scooters will have battery packs made by international companies. Samsung cells are up there with the best and will be found in high-quality electric scooter batteries. Now these high quality international branded electric scooters will always have really good quality control measures in place.

Therefore premium electric scooters will always have a sophisticated BMS (battery management system) that controls charging and discharging. The BMS will monitor the battery pack and trigger a cut-off if overheating occurs. But cheap Chinese models will have poor quality battery packs and battery management systems that will not detect overheating. BMS will help prolong the life of the battery. An average electric scooter battery is able to handle between 300 to 500 charge/discharge cycles before it starts to lose capacity.

Premium scooters like E-twow can handle between 1200 and 1500 if it is given the correct maintenance. These batteries can last between 3 and 5 years, depending on the use.

Don’t take a chance on cheap lithium batteries!

What does V and Ah of a battery mean on the specification sheet?

Now most often on commuter scooters, you will see 24V, 36V or 48V. The volts give the electric scooter power or torque and in most cases the higher voltage the higher the speed. “A” is for electric current in Amperes and “H” is for time in Hours. Ah or Amperes hours give the electric scooter the distance or range. So the greater the Ah the longer the range capability. A lot of electric scooters range is measured with a load of 70kg, speed of 20km/h and wind speed under 10km/h on a flat surface. So if the scooter has a range of 30km and you weigh over 70kg. If you travel at a speed faster than 20kph you will not reach 30km range on a full battery. You need to take wind and slope into account also. This will be the case with all electric scooters.
